5G is the foundation for expanding the potential of the Networked Society. The move to 5G will add a new element: the industrial internet. We’ll see new as-a-service business models based on network slicing. Network slices in the context of 5G will be like virtual networks on-demand. 5G will enable more secure transactions and expand the battery life of IoT devices by 10X. All this will create opportunities for new use cases that we haven’t yet dreamed of. -Ericsson
First let’s take a look at what 5G means for us as a society overall then we can see how it effects the gaming industry.
Obviously download speed is very important to all gamer’s mobile, console, PC or Handheld, we want our new titles, DLC, updates as fast as we can get’em! The chart below shows the difference in speeds and the gap from 4G to 5G is unfathomable. 20 Gigabytes per second? A 100 GB movie in 40 seconds, Gears of war 4 was 120GB on PC and would download in less than a minute on 5G. This doesn’t sound like real life, Las Vegas is an A market city the fastest residential land line speed available now is 1Gbps from Cox Cable 5g which is 20 times less than 5G.
What is an online gamer’s best friend? Latency. eSports has recently changed the way we all view latency milliseconds now feel like seconds when you are in hardcore competitive tournaments. This effect trickles down to the what we like to call the casual/competitive gamers who want to emulate these conditions to find an advantage on the battlefield. We buy mouse’s, keyboards, monitors, high tier internet speeds trying to shave off the a few MS and now this….. 5G. In this chart below, we look different platforms MS over the years, we are very impressed with these numbers or should we say number.
