Back In From The Dark: Restoring FNAFs Reputation

Five Nights At Freddies may seem like a run-of-the-mill horror/thriller game, but it’s well known for having a surprising amount of plot depth. According to a set of fans interviewed by Screen Rant, this has enabled the series to move between its darker themes and more family-friendly experiences. Unfortunately, the latest iteration – Security Breach – was a relative flop in front of critics as it went full throttle into dark tone and horror. The franchise has a lot of room to grow; the expansion of FNAF VR, including into augmented reality, is a huge opportunity in the horror game. Finding a way back will help to the game’s legacy.

In the works

Of course, there is another FNAF game in the works. The vibrant online community supporting the franchise has been digging, and once the next round of DLC is completed, there’s going to be an opportunity for a new title to reshape the future of the series. Indeed, Gamer Revolution has highlighted several areas of polish and fine-tuning that future games need. The information is there for the developers, Steel Wool Studios, to make a real effort in the next game and ensure that it’s fit for the legions of adoring fans who continue to make the series a success.

Capturing the narrative

One of the strengths of FNAF is its consummate support for fan creations. The number of custom modules and spin-offs created by enthusiastic fans are innumerable; some of them even shade the mainline games in their quality. This has also caused controversy, however, according to Polygon. The fact that fans can create what they want also means that titles are added to the fandom that doesn’t necessarily meet with standards that would be expected of modern games and the gaming community. This narrative has to be changed, and projects that meet the standards and values of the games promoted. Some of this may come with the departure of IP owner Scott Cawthon.

Early retirement

Scott Cawthon recently departed the FNAF franchise. According to Forbes, this was related to the controversy surrounding his support of certain political figures and political stances. It is undoubtedly sad to see the creator of the series, the individual who had the most input on the tone and setting, depart the series, but it will also help to clear the air. With a new structure in place and clear new leadership when it comes to the direction and goals of future games, the opportunity is set out for the developers to forge a new path ahead. This will ensure that the right tone is struck, and that fan developers are working towards the right goals.

With that, FNAF can become a critical force once again. The game is fortunate in that its huge fanbase and addictive gameplay have preserved its long-term viability – huge sales attest to that. To remain on top for a longer time, however, the game needs to change today in order to seize the narrative.
