Conquer Ancient Japan in KOEI TECMO’s NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, Launching July 20, 2023

Today, KOEI TECMO America and developer Kou Shibusawa unveiled the latest battle mechanics for their upcoming historical simulation, NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening. As the 16th installment in Kou Shibusawa’s renowned franchise, NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening combines military strategy with political diplomacy in an effort to dominate Japan’s tumultuous Warring States era. The game is set to release digitally in North America on July 20, 2023, for PlayStation®4, Nintendo Switch, and PC Windows via Steam®.

NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening transports players to 16th century Japan, where they will experience the challenges of the Warring States Period through the eyes of a daimyō, a powerful Japanese leader, landowner, and feudal lord. Commanding their troops in battle, players must quickly assess each situation on a constantly evolving battlefield in order to gain control of the map. Selecting the proper marching route is crucial, as some paths may be obstructed by narrow roads or enemy fortresses, potentially leading armies into disastrous circumstances.

In addition to navigating the terrain, players must also be prepared for smaller skirmishes near their daimyō’s unit. When a major battle is initiated, allies and enemies from the surrounding area will converge on a single battlefield to determine the clan’s fate. The outcome of these clashes can significantly impact neighboring clans, putting the daimyō’s skills as a military leader and political negotiator to the test.

Key to conquering the map in NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening is mastering the art of siege warfare. Sieges occur when players attack an enemy’s main base or defensive position, with each castle boasting unique battlefields and involving surrounding domains and landholders. The attacking side must breach defensive equipment and engage in combat across various terrains, including mountain castles and flatlands, to achieve victory. The daimyō must devise an attack or defense strategy based on each castle’s distinct terrain.

Historical sites and terrain featured in the game include Nagashima, a stronghold of the Holy Rebellion located at the mouth of the Kiso Three Rivers; Kasugayama, Kenshin Uesugi’s castle overlooking the Sekigawa River and the Sea of Japan; Tsukui, a castle at the entrance to Yamanashi Prefecture on the Kantō Plain; and Kameyama, a castle in Mie Prefecture situated between the Suzuka Mountains and Ise Bay.

The attacking side emerges victorious in a siege by either destroying all enemy units or capturing the main citadel. However, they will be defeated if their allied units are wiped out or their total morale drops to zero. As total morale decreases over time, swift action is essential. The defending side wins by either enduring the assault until the enemy’s total morale reaches zero or by eliminating all enemy units. On defense, it is vital to resist enemy attacks while safeguarding equipment and troops to prevent the enemy’s total morale from increasing. Success in a siege not only solidifies a daimyō’s authority throughout the region but also helps secure their place in history.
