Dragonbane: The Revival of a Legendary Swedish Fantasy RPG

Free League Publishing has announced the digital release of Dragonbane, the new edition of Sweden’s first and most popular tabletop RPG, Drakar och Demoner. Currently available for pre-order on the Free League store, players who purchase now can access the complete PDF package ahead of the physical release scheduled for fall.

Dragonbane has garnered significant attention and was recently voted one of the most anticipated RPGs of 2023 at EN World. The game can be pre-ordered on the Free League website, with immediate access to the complete PDF package, or at DrivethruRPG.

The Dragonbane core set comprises the complete Rules book, an Adventures book featuring eleven interconnected adventures forming an epic campaign, five pre-generated characters, over 70 custom cards for treasure, adventures, initiative, and more, and a beautifully designed map of the Misty Vale setting by cartographer Francesca Baerald.

Lead game designer Tomas Härenstam, known for his work on Forbidden Lands, Mutant: Year Zero, ALIEN RPG, and Blade Runner RPG, is at the helm of Dragonbane’s development. The adventure writing team includes notable figures from the Swedish RPG scene, spanning from the 1980s to the present day. Acclaimed illustrator Johan Egerkrans, known for his work on Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying, serves as the game’s lead illustrator.

Free League Publishing is also encouraging creators to design and publish their own supplements for Dragonbane and Drakar och Demoner, having recently released a third-party license for the game.

As the new edition of Drakar och Demoner, Dragonbane builds upon its 40-year legacy in Scandinavian tabletop gaming. The game offers an updated, innovative design that reflects Free League’s commitment to high-quality gaming experiences.

Dragonbane is designed to accommodate a wide range of fantasy adventures, with a touch of humor and light-heartedness. The game is characterized by its “mirth and mayhem roleplaying” style, making it suitable for both long campaigns and one-shot adventures. The mythology focuses on the eternal struggle between dragons and demons, with the ruins of fallen kingdoms that once worshiped these godlike creatures offering hidden treasures to daring adventurers.

The contributing writers for Dragonbane include prominent figures from the Swedish tabletop RPG industry, as well as renowned historical fiction author Niklas Natt och Dag (1793 The Wolf and the Watchman).
