IF YOU’RE LOOKIN’ FOR FUN, look no further than THE CUPHEAD SHOW – the new, highly-anticipated Netflix Original Animated Series releasing February 18 and scored by EGO PLUM (Jellystone, The Patrick Star Show) – aka “The Cartoon Composer”!
The new series is based on the hit Cuphead video game*, which was lauded for its jazzy score by Kristofer Maddigan and old-school 1930’s animation style – think Fleischer animations and classic black & white Disney cartoons.
With such an iconic scoring style from the video game, Ego wanted to approach scoring The Cuphead Show in a similar fashion by utilizing real instrumentations grounded in big band and jazz. His goal wasn’t to imitate the game’s score but rather “draw from the same musical fountain” that Maddigan had used while adding his own distinctive sound and signature sensibility that has made him the musical king of cartoon animation.
Heavily influenced by the Looney Tunes scores of Carl Stalling as well as the quirky cartoon jazz of Raymond Scott, Ego crafted his own classic cartoon score straight out of the ’30s-’40s. He also co-wrote, arranged, and produced the incredibly catchy main title song “Welcome to The Cuphead Show”!
