FPS Horror Game Scorn Delayed

If you’re a longtime fan of horror games like me, you tend to keep an eye on any upcoming titles, whether it’s an established franchise or a brand new IP. Sometimes, the news you get is a little sad. Ebb Software’s H. R. Giger-inspired horror game called Scorn is one of those brand new IPs and has been in development for quite some time (since 2014 to be exact). After five months of silence from the devs on the status of the game, we finally have some news … and it’s news I don’t think many people like to hear. Unfortunately, Scorn has been officially delayed until 2020.

This postponement is the latest for the long-in-development project, which raised almost EUR €200,000 (USD $221,870) via a Kickstarter campaign that Ebb Software launched at that time The game was envisioned to release in two separate parts, with the first projected to release in October last year.

However, last August, the team announced it had received external funding that would allow it to release Scorn in one piece, and thus expected to be ready at some point this year. If I am not mistaken, a lot of people were excited to play this game and an early build of the game was even shown off by Twitch streamers and YouTubers (including PewDiePie).

The latest update reveals that Ebb Software is currently working on completing the environment and systems of the game, although it succeeded in achieving an “important internal milestone” in July. Key systems that have been implemented recently include character healing, full-body awareness for the main character, and “three more huge puzzle systems, some spanning the entire levels.”

Following these achievements, the team is “taking a small breather before pushing forward.” Furthermore, the update included no further information about a prospective release date … just 2020.

Scorn has been in development since 2014, and the team is dedicated to delivering a polished product without the teething issues that have plagued other Kickstarter-funded projects, such as The Mighty No. 9.

To be honest, I’m glad the devs are taking a break, or better yet a breather. Sometimes it’s best to do so to recollect your thoughts and regain that groove you may have lost or even started losing during development. Overall, it’s also good for their mental health. As there is no need for the devs (or any devs for that matter) to suffer through the crunch cycle. That is just my opinion though.

Overall, the game is coming along at a good pace for an indie game. I expect to see another big update on the game in Q1 2020 or December 2019 at the earliest — so it’s best to keep an eye on their Kickstarter until then.

I know delaying a game is tough on people … from the owners of the company to the devs, all the way to the gamers who wait with anticipation. But if it means a better product overall to the company and to the devs, I’m pretty sure the gaming community as a whole understands then as well, because it means a better product for them too.
