Free League Launches New Open Game Licenses for Tabletop RPGs

Swedish tabletop publisher, Free League, has recently announced the launch of two new open game licenses for community creators, the Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for the upcoming fantasy RPG, Dragonbane. These licenses will allow creators worldwide to produce their own content royalty-free. Free League is committed to providing community creators with the ability to produce their own content, worldwide and royalty-free.

The new Year Zero Engine FTL is designed to be fair and easy to understand for creators. It gives creators an irrevocable, worldwide, and royalty-free right to use the Year Zero Engine Standard Reference Document (YZE SRD) and publish their own roleplaying material based on it. The YZE SRD itself has been given a massive overhaul and update, including rules for chases, vehicles, travel, and magic. The YZE has been used in most Free League RPGs in recent years, including Mutant: Year Zero, Coriolis, Tales From the Loop, Forbidden Lands, ALIEN, Vaesen, Blade Runner RPG, and the upcoming The Walking Dead Universe RPG.

In addition, Free League has released a third-party license for the upcoming Dragonbane RPG, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter last year. The license allows creators to freely publish RPG supplements explicitly compatible with Dragonbane and the original Swedish game Drakar och Demoner.

The Dragonbane license is intended for third-party supplements for the game and not new standalone games, and it does not have an SRD. This license is similar to the Free League Workshop community content program on DriveThruRPG, but it allows creators to freely choose where to share or sell Dragonbane and Drakar och Demoner modules without paying any royalties.

The new open game licenses for the Year Zero Engine and Dragonbane will enable creators to produce their own content and expand on the roleplaying games, promoting the growth of the tabletop gaming community. The Free League’s commitment to its community will undoubtedly continue to promote creativity and innovation in the world of tabletop gaming.
