Game in Game: Gambling in Computer Games

Searching for something to play online can be not an easy thing to do, especially if you are looking for new experiences and emotions and it is not your first day playing online or computer games. You may look for some online casinos like RedDog or MMORPGs like Neverwinter – but still, feel like missing something. Maybe it is because you are not sure what you love more – gambling or gaming?

Gambling or Gaming?

Let’s first find out the difference between those terms because sometimes they can be confusing and used interchangeably.

  • Gambling is about playing for money with an uncertain outcome. Money wagered, risk or excitement, and the chance to win a prize should always be present.
  • Gaming is about interactive computer and video games – skill games, strategy games, or simply recreational games.

These two activities occasionally cross over despite the distinction between gaming and gambling.

In legal papers, the term “gaming” occasionally refers to legal gambling.

Esports betting is a form of gambling

Video game events and tournaments are known as eSports also. The most popular video game genres include first-person shooters (FPS), fighting games, multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA), and real-time strategies (RTS): LoL, Dota 2, CS, StarCraft, and many other popular games.

Although eSports is a form of gaming, there is a gambling component:  when betting on eSports is included, it is considered gambling. ESports betting is now one of the internet gambling industries expanding the fastest, with total wagers estimated to exceed $8 billion in 2019.

Elements of gaming and gambling can be mixed

The most recent GTA Online upgrade, Diamond Casino and Resort, is only one example of how gambling can often mix with computer games. The video game has gambling features, allowing players to visit a casino and play poker or slots. They may buy in-game currency with real money and then trade it for casino chips. As a result, more than 50 countries banned the updated version.

There are other opportunities for the two concepts to intersect, including the inclusion of gambling aspects in online games and games on social networks:

  • cross-marketing of casino games to video game users;
  • introduction of gaming functions to online gambling platforms;
  • the existence of identical games on gaming and gambling resources from one operator;
  • gamblification of games, in which players receive cash prizes in video games.

Gambling in Computer Games

To give you a better vision of how gambling elements can be included in video games, let’s look at the examples that are managed to do so successfully.

Fallout: New Vegas

The Nevada-based game simply could not exist without gambling. The plot claims that a nuclear calamity affected the entire world, but Las Vegas is more resilient than other areas. Additionally, a few casinos managed to survive there.

You can still go to casinos in New Vegas, such as Atomic Cowboy, Vicki and Vance, Sierra Madre, and Ultralux. These places host some story events and offer players the chance to play slots, roulette, poker, and blackjack.

Players of Fallout: New Vegas can even increase the likelihood of succeeding at the casino by boosting luck-related features.

Grand Theft Auto

The Grand Theft Auto series included gambling in GTA: Vice City, where players had to pay membership fees and wager on their own performance in a race.

In GTA: San Andreas, the variety of gambling options has substantially increased, making it possible to visit the casino and select the fun of your choice. For example, players might choose from card games, roulette, and slot machines.

The heroes at Las Venturas’ casinos even have a unique skill called “gambling,” whose parameter rises as the player spends more time there. As a result, high-level characters can become high rollers and place huge bets.

Casinos played a significant role in the plot of the games that came after GTA: San Andreas, and it is now difficult to conceive this virtual world without gambling fun.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

There are no common gambling games in the realm of the fabled The Witcher 3. However, Gwent, a made-up card game, is loved by gamers.

When Gerald first encounters it in the White Orchard settlement, the Gwent stalks him practically wherever he goes. The NPCs Gerald meets later often offer him to play a game or two. Although it is not required to accept this, many gamers enjoy Gwent and do not turn down the chance to spread their cards. They can even take part in tournaments for this game after that.

Wild Hunt, The Witcher 3 Gwent rules appear to be complex at first, but after a few tries, everything becomes clear.

Far Cry 3

Fans of the Far Cry 3 game can play poker in addition to testing their mettle against a pirate group.

The storyline ensures that the player picks up the cards at least once. The player then has the choice to play a few rounds of Texas Hold’em whenever he wants by sitting down at the poker table.

It could turn into a real test in addition to a break and a change in the game’s trajectory. Poker in Far Cry 3 may be just as thrilling as playing in a real virtual or actual casino. There are many levels of difficulty.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Players of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood can roll dice. The Sleeping Fox bar is where the local gamblers congregate to try their luck.

The game’s rules have been somewhat adjusted and made simpler compared to standard craps. The player wins if the dice reveal a 7 or an 11, and loses with 2, 3, or 12. Any other outcome entitles players to increase their wager and roll the dice once more.
