God of War: Ragnarok’s Trailer and All You Need to Know

God Of War is an action-adventure game that has followed the journey of Kratos, once a spartan soldier in the days of ancient Greece, all the way to his becoming the God of War, replacing his vanquished foe Ares. The first game was released in 2005 for the Playstation 2, but the newest series branded back to simply “God of War”, has taken Kratos into the Norse pantheon of gods for a new adventure with his young son Atreus. In this 2018 game for the Playstation 4, Kratos fights many Norse mythological monsters and teaches Atreus how to fight and live, first as a soldier, then as his true nature – a divine. Now, with a sequel teased at the Playstation Showcase, where will the pair go next?

Where Does The Series Go Next?

It seems the creators don’t want to part from the Norse mythology theme yet, a theme that has been popular all over pop culture in recent years, from sites like https://ggpoker.com to the recent successful survival games like Valheim. With the love that the setting is receiving from the players, it’s no wonder God of War: Ragnarok will maintain its Norse setting and theme. So, the dream Atreus had at the finale of the first game must come to fruition; the Ragnarok. After Atreus and his father Kratos spread his mother’s ashes across the grave of Giants, Atreus falls into a restless sleep, dreaming of the great thunder God Thor confronting Kratos and the coming Ragnarok.

And the trailer? The trailer shows nothing but pure awe. A now older Atreus, or Loki, seeks to find out who he is, what it means to be Loki. Moreso, he seeks to prevent the Ragnarok, the end of days. For Kratos, it shows the God of War is more father than previously seen, fiercely defending his son and last connection to his late wife. Of course, it also shows Kratos’ excellent fighting capabilities, with new and dynamic abilities waiting ready for the players to use. It also shows an ancient and mythical version of Norway, with many mythic creatures and peoples, whole new lands to be explored, and the lifting up of the old Norse god of war Tyr.

What is Ragnarok?

Ragnarok, the end of days, the fate of the gods, and the death of the old world. Ragnarok has had many interpretations by scholars, and arguably even more by game designers, storytellers, and more. In the original tale from the Norse, it is believed that Ragnarok will be a vast battle between the powers above, Thor and Odin, Freya and Tyr and Loki. This battle will lead to the death of the gods, the old world being submerged in water and the new world rising to hold two human survivors. It is an important event across all of Norse mythology and theory in history.

However, Ragnarok has been portrayed in many other forms across pop culture and media. Those familiar with the Marvel movie “Thor: Ragnarok” will remember the Asgardians’ home of Asgard being destroyed in fire and flame, with Thor leaving behind his sister Hela to fight and fall with his home at the hands of the beast Surtur. In this form of Ragnarok, it is Asgard that is destroyed, and though Odin and Hela fall, Loki and Thor survive the event.

The new God Of War is still a while away, but all who have seen the trailer are hugely excited to see it come to their home consoles. However, it is a Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 exclusive, so it is best you ready your controllers for what will almost certainly be one of the best games of 2022.
