Lionsgate please don’t mess this one up! I think by far the Borderlands universe will be one of the most challenging to bring to life on the Hollywood big screen. It’s a really twisted version of reality that covers an entire universe from top to bottom. Lionsgate films will attempt to recreate the Borderlands world alongside actors Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Director Eli Roth will spearhead the film’s adaptation which is set to begin production soon and hit theaters in 2023. Lionsgate has confirmed Black will be cast as the fan-favorite Claptrap an overenthusiastic robot with bipolar tendencies which can be annoying but yet funny at times.
Director Eli Roth shared. “I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,” Roth continued. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”
Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, also spoke to the casting. “It’s one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made. Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film – he’ll bring so much to the movie.”
Even if you have only dabbled in the Borderlands series you know who Claptrap is due to his overwhelming role in the series. In my head, I am having a hard time aligning Calptrap’s voice with Blacks. They just feel so far apart in tone but if anyone could pull this off it would be Jack Black the guy is just amazing. I also am having a hard time seeing typical Kevin Hart humor in the Borderlands universe. This movie will live and die by the quality of its script however Jack Black can make a bad movie watchable. We will see how the rest of the cast plays out under the direction of Eli Roth. You have one job Lionsgate! Don’t let us down!
