Meow Wolf’s first annual live-streamed video gaming tournament brings together the top players for retro arcade shoot-’em-up, Galaga, with $10K up for grabs.
Nationally-renowned art collective Meow Wolf announces its first-annual live streamed video gaming event, SCORE WARS, kicking off with a Galaga World Championship that will bring together the best Galaga players on the planet for an epic four-day throwdown to smash world records and crown a new world champ.
SCORE WARS: Galaga World Championship takes place Thursday, March 29 to Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, NM – home to the phenomenal immersive arts experience, the House of Eternal Return. All of the action will be live-streamed to Twitch via live streaming specialists XSplit, who are known for producing major tournaments including the Capcom Pro Tour, Nintendo World Championship and partnering with leading video games publishers such as Devolver Digital and Twitch to produce live stages and content for the gaming community.
Galaga World Championship events include Pro-and-Amateur-Level competitions. Pre-qualifying Pros will face off against established elites such as Philip Day, Andrew Barrow, and Andrew Laidlaw in marathon-mode runs and a $10,000 top-prize arcade-style tournament. Amateur-level players will qualify on-site to compete head-to-head for a $1,500 top prize.
“Video games have been such a huge influence for Meow Wolf over the years. We are millennials who grew up with gaming as integral components of our lives.” said Meow Wolf CEO Vince Kadlubek. “Of all the retro games, BANDAI NAMCO’s Galaga is one of the most influential to Meow Wolf’s aesthetic.”
“It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to partner with Meow Wolf. XSplit has powered live streams and events but nothing quite like this. The team has a unique vision: taking a world-renowned classic game such as Galaga and reinvigorating it with the magic and wonder Meow Wolf has become known for.” said John Howe-Marshall, Chief Marketing Officer of SplitmediaLabs, developers of XSplit, Player.me, and Challonge.
This announcement also marks a new major partnership between Meow Wolf and The Nuttery Entertainment to develop the animated series, Galaga Chronicles. The partnership will reimagine and extend BANDAI NAMCO’s legacy brand through animated content, physical exhibitions, merchandise, live media, and Meow Wolf’s Galaga World Championship.
