Minecraft, one of the best-selling video games of all time, with 200 million copies sold across all platforms and 126 million monthly active users as of 2020, will have a broadcasted event this year, confirms Mojang Studios. Mojang Studios is a Swedish video game developer and a studio of Xbox Game Studios based in Stockholm. Markus Persson founded it in 2009 as Mojang Specifications. He inherited the name from a previous video game venture he left two years prior. Mojang began developing the sandbox game Minecraft that year, which would become the best-selling video game of all time and establish a successful multimedia franchise. In conjunction with Jakob Porsér, Persson incorporated the business as Mojang AB in late 2010 and hired Carl Manneh as chief executive officer. With a desire to move on from Minecraft, Persson offered to sell his share in Mojang. Microsoft wholly acquired the company through Xbox Game Studios (then called Microsoft Studios) in November 2014. Persson, Porsér, and Manneh subsequently left Mojang, with Jonas Mårtensson replacing Manneh. In May 2020, Mojang was rebranded as Mojang Studios.
As of 2016, the company employs 70 people in its Stockholm offices, including chief executive officer Mårtensson and chief operating officer Vu Bui. Apart from Minecraft, Mojang Studios has developed Caller’s Bane, a digital collectible card game, Crown and Council, a turn-based strategy game, and the spin-off games Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons. It also released various smaller games as part of game jams organized by Humble Bundle. It published the externally developed Cobalt and Cobalt WASD. The details for the event will be out next month. Mojang usually hosts a Minecon or Minecraft Live event every year. But this year, it was going to be different, whereas that even was supposed to be the first Minecraft Festival.
A convention that was going to be vast and ambitious. But since COVID hit just a few months ago, it has delayed the event, and it was unsure if something would take its place. But according to a Mojang Studios employee, it has just been confirmed that something is indeed coming later this year, according to LadyAgnes, Mojang Studios Lead Gameplay Developer, took to Twitter to give us a tidbit. According to the tweet, Mojang Studios is planning a broadcast or streamed event for later this year, presumably to share with their community their roadmap for Minecraft moving forward and possibly new info about the future Minecraft Dungeons DLC, community events, and more. We have no idea what form this event will take yet, however, and LadyAgnes wasn’t sharing any of those details. Instead, we were told to wait for more information next month. For now, all we have is that there will be “exciting new things.” We’ll keep you posted the moment we learn anything else about the event and what we might be able to expect. Hopefully, Mojang Studios will confirm the next major update for Minecraft, which we believe should be the Mountain Update.
