Tokyo-based Polyscape Inc. has launched their latest project, a real-time dungeon generation roguelike action game titled ‘MISTROGUE: Mist and the Living Dungeons.’ Available on Steam (Windows/Mac) in Early Access for $19.9/£16.50/€19.50, the game offers a unique and ever-changing experience for players.
Developed by a team of six in just half a year, MISTROGUE offers a variety of play styles, controller support, and compatibility with Steam Deck. The Early Access version features three dungeons and a playable story available in Japanese, English, and Chinese. The full release is planned for Autumn 2023, with a Nintendo Switch port also in the works.
In MISTROGUE: Mist and the Living Dungeons, players assume the role of Mist, a treasure hunter exploring dungeons that transform in real-time. Utilizing a range of skills and items, players must navigate these living dungeons, which are filled with monsters, traps, and changing terrains. The game encourages strategic use of ‘Maze Stones’ to create paths and the development of a powerful skill build to withstand the onslaught of enemies and dungeon gimmicks.
The dynamic living dungeons react to Mist’s actions, creating new challenges and opportunities for players. Examples of these dynamic elements include the sudden appearance of platforms, collapsing bridges, moving floors, and varying terrain elevations. Players must remain vigilant and use their dodge ability to avoid falling from the ever-changing paths.
Mist’s level resets upon entering a dungeon, making each run a new challenge. Players risk losing some items and currency obtained during a run if Mist is defeated while exploring. The ever-changing dungeon layouts ensure that players must stay alert during their journey.
MISTROGUE enables players to use items and switch equipment during battles, allowing for strategic adjustments based on the current situation. However, items and skills are subject to cooldown periods, preventing continuous use. Creative strategies, such as gathering enemies in one spot and stunning them with a spell book or using knockback attacks, can help players gain an advantage in battle.
The game also offers a unique puzzle aspect through the use of ‘Maze Stones’ and special skills from certain equipment, enabling players to create custom paths or drop footholds along with enemies. Mist can equip weapons, shields, bangles, and rings, each with their own inherent skills. By mixing and matching equipment, players can develop powerful builds tailored to their preferences or the specific enemies they encounter.
Rings in MISTROGUE do not have skills but instead raise specific parameters. As ring drops are randomized, players must optimize their equipment choices based on the rings they find.
