Mobius “Google Play Best Game 2016 – Most Beautiful Award” Developer Interview

Developer Interview / Project Leader: Naoki Hamaguchi

1)    The “Welcome Back” campaign is currently taking place! What were the reasons for conducting this event?

We hold these types of in-game events periodically in Japan as well, but it’s easier for players to pick up a game that has already been in service for some time or retry a game they have previously played when there is some sort of catalyst. We are offering numerous bonuses, so I hope that many new players take the opportunity to pick up and play the game!

2)    A special website dedicated to this event has also been set up for audiences worldwide!  How do you feel about this initiative?

The English version is directed towards a global audience, so we wanted to create a single, dedicated website for all regions to ensure players feel, first-hand, the sheer volume of people playing the game worldwide outside their own countries. It seems like the website has been well received thus far, so we’re quite happy about that.

3)      Four months have passed since the launch of the international version of MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, but was there anything that left a lasting impression?

What stood out most was seeing players who had already been playing the Japanese version giving advice to players enjoying the English version and exciting the community. We were really encouraged by the fans that had supported MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY even before its release.

4)      The international version also now supports the landscape mode. What were the reasons for developing / supporting this landscape mode?

The PC Windows version of the Japanese game was actually released on Steam in October, so the layout that supports the landscape configuration for Windows was enabled on tablets. Of course, we are also planning to release the Windows version of the international game and currently preparing to do so. We will update everyone once we are ready to release the game, so please wait a little while longer.

5)      We have already seen collaborations such as those with FINAL FANTASY X andFINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 in the international version. These FINAL FANTASY collaboration events appear to be extremely popular every time they are conducted overseas and have received quite a positive response. Do you have any plans for another FF collaboration event?

The collaborations with the mainline FINAL FANTASY titles are also well received in Japan. Though, there are times when it takes great pains to get things right in ensuring the level of quality demanded from a mainline FINAL FANTASY title… Of course, we also hear and constructively evaluate the demands from our fans playing the international version, so it’d be great if everyone can look forward to these events in anticipation.

6)    Currently, there is a lot of hype surrounding FINAL FANTASY XV worldwide. Does MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY have any plans for collaborative events with FFXV?

We are extremely happy to hear so many people around the world are playing FINAL FANTASY XV. MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY would also like to collaborate with FINAL FANTASY XV if there is an opportunity to do so. That said, we release original stories in MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY that integrate the universe of the titles we collaborate with, so at the moment, we feel more strongly about not disrupting the players experience of enjoying the original, intricately built universe of FINAL FANTASY XV (laughs).

7)      The New Year is just around the corner, but looking towards the New Year, are there any plans for special events?

Specific content has not been decided at the moment, but each region celebrates at different times of the year- for example some Asian countries celebrate with the Lunar New Year at the beginning of the year, so it would be great if we could hold events that also draw cultural inspiration from various countries.

8)    Finally, any words for our fans playing the international version?

Thank you for continuously supporting MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY. Part 2 of Chapter III is coming in December where there will be rapid new developments to the story and the main character’s growth system, so we hope that players have fun with the updates we have in store!

1)    The game received the Google Play Best Game 2016 “Most Beautiful” award, but how do you feel about receiving this award?

It is truly an honor to receive this award. Our goal was to enable consumers to experience rich, PC/ onsole-level graphics on smartphones. I definitely feel a sense of relief, but mainly a sense of responsibility to strive to deliver a game that is refined even further.

2)      What is the “core, central concept” behind MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY’s design?

We built the universe based on the original FINAL FANTASY. And, aside from that, there are various words and features that have been cultivated throughout the series that serve as a basis.

3)      Did you contemplate over any aspect of the game when designing MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY?

Building the specifications within certain restrictions. The biggest, underlying aspect was to determine how much we can increase the quality with little memory. As far as the Warrior of Light’s costume design, its personality, silhouette, and the changes that occur for every high level job. Establishing the presentation for the vertical screen. Especially the camera during the battle and cut scenes as well as the layout. Furthermore, the UI layout. I wanted to avoid the typical layout often seen in social games where the top half displays the game screen and the bottom half incorporates a sequence of buttons. Like this, there were countless other aspects we contemplated over.

4)      The international version was also released this year, but will the design approach change moving forward now that the game is released in various countries?

The resources used in the English version are generally delayed by a year, so there are no special adjustments to note for now. In the game, the Japanese word “kōrin,” which means “descends,” is currently displayed in Japanese characters. But, I would like to leave in the Japanese characters so the aesthetics will appeal to players. That said, there may be cases where we will be slightly more conscious in our design approach moving forward — for example, depending on the subject of the collaboration.

5)      In designing MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, was there anything that left a lasting impression?

Bringing in characters from different universes through collaborations. For example, when we collaborated with FINAL FANTASY RECORD KEEPER, we brought Tyro, a character from a completely different world into the world of MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, and that picture was something that really left a lasting impression.

6)      Any final words for our fans?

The sky is the limit for the world of MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY. We will continue to create graphics that will surprise everyone, so we ask for the fans’ continued support!
