KOEI TECMO America has announced the release of NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, the 16th entry in the popular historical simulation series by Kou Shibusawa. The game, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION franchise, is set to launch on July 20th, 2023, for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The series, which began in 1983, has shipped over 10 million units worldwide and has become a favorite among virtual military strategists.
In NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, players assume the role of a daimyō, a powerful Japanese leader, during the Warring States Period of 16th century Japan. As the head of their own clan, players must make crucial decisions in areas such as economy, diplomacy, and military strategy, with the ultimate goal of unifying the country. AI retainers, who think and act on their own judgment, support players throughout the game, providing submissions to help plan battle strategies.
Players will be able to issue policies impacting their entire clan, appoint landholders to develop domains independently and appoint conservators and council officials to guide the clan’s overall direction. Direct conversations with officers can help strengthen allegiance, prevent defections, and reveal new strategies as players deepen bonds with their retainers.
NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening reintroduces the series’ popular siege feature in a new form. For the first time, sieges take place on a single map with varied terrain and different castles or castle towns, offering players dynamic sieges and an added level of strategy. Attackers must choose where to break through and which route to take, while defenders must decide on the deployment of defensive equipment and how to intercept the attacking force.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the series, NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening will include various features such as landmarks and achievements that influence strategy, a wide range of scenarios, events, policies, and more. Elements from previous titles will also be present, including an editing function that allows players to change officer status, background music, and scenarios, or create new clans.
