Runescape Review – All you Need to Know

It might seem that MMORPGs have been around forever, but in reality, they’re a relatively new concept in the world of video games. World of Warcraft is the most famous example, but the genre has a rich history that extends far before WoW hit the market. Runescape was one of the biggest MMORPGs around upon its release in 2001, and almost 20 years later it’s still entertaining players on a large scale. What is it about this game that still entices fans so many years later?

Using Gambling Mechanics

One great feature of Runescape that helps to keep players coming back is the ability to gamble in-game. While gambling mechanics aren’t the same as with online casino games, players can place wagers with in-game currency on a variety of different activities. It is usually offered on the minigames within Runescape.

This adds an extra dimension to the experience of playing because it’s possible to increase the money you have to spend on important items by wagering intelligently. It’s almost a minigame within a minigame.

There are also other forms of in-game gambling that can take place with real money. This is against the terms and conditions of the game though, as it is open to abuse, and some unscrupulous players used gambling as a way to scam people.

The Sunk Cost Fallacy

The sunk cost fallacy is when you are unwilling to give something up, even if you no longer enjoy it, because of how much time you’ve devoted to it. It’s often seen as a negative, but in the context of Runescape, that’s not the case. Runescape receives regular updates, which expands what it’s able to offer its long-term fans.

Because the game is constantly evolving and improving as a result, it benefits from more regular updates than WoW, and the sunk cost fallacy is not quite the same as with other games.

The regular new content means it’s not always the same experience when playing Runescape, either. This is how it differs from other titles that keep you playing even though you are just going through the same missions over and over again.

So, what is Runescape?

Runescape is a fantasy-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. It invites players to control their own avatar and interact with the game’s well-rendered environment. The game itself allows players to do pretty much whatever they want.

So, for example, if someone wants to just talk to other characters and use it to socialize, they can. If a player wants to complete as many quests as possible and slay monsters, they can. The list goes on, which provides a large amount of depth and scale.

Players can train different skills within the game, a process that requires the standard grinding that almost every RPG ever released features. It’s up to you which skills you train, and you can go in any direction that you like in terms of how well-rounded your character is. As five different skill sets are available, each with a range of individual skills to train, Runescape brings a lot of depth to its grinding.

What’s so impressive about the game is that it still maintains a dedicated fanbase, even almost 20 years after its original release. So, whenever you decide to play there will always be a large number of people all ready to experience the game with you. Crucially, part of the reason behind the loyal following is that Runescape is completely free to play.

While the graphics might not be quite up to date with modern releases, they’re far from awful, with some old-fashioned charm. The visuals might not be breathtaking, but they’re certainly serviceable. What does Runescape offer in terms of long-term gameplay, though?

Quests and Storyline

Unlike a lot of RPGs, Runescape doesn’t really have a singular underlying story. What it does have, though, is a world full of stories that you can either get involved with or completely ignore.

So, if you want to get started on a quest, you can do so easily. Once you start a quest, you will be free to follow that story through to its conclusion. The stories usually place the player avatar at the center of the narrative, but can sometimes include well-known NPC characters such as Zamorak to add some depth to the Runescape world.

The quests themselves follow the standard formula of RPG quests. If you enjoy playing RPGs, it’s fair to say you’re likely to enjoy the quests in Runescape. They also offer players the standard rewards, providing extra incentive to see quests through to completion. You can expect a big chunk of experience, currency, and special items when you put time into finishing a quest.

Stuck with the Times

Runescape might not deliver a state-of-the-art gaming experience, but what it does have is plenty of heart and depth, which few other games can offer today. If you begin playing Runescape now, you will have almost 20 years of storytelling to catch up on.

All you need is an internet connection and time. This makes it well worth dipping your toe into.
