See The Real World Paintball Inspiration Behind Snapshot VR in New Developer Diary

Today, independent developer Giant Scam Industries (a sincere and legitimate company, we swear) is pleased to announce that their upcoming virtual-reality arena shooter Snapshot VR will be available for Windows PC via Viveport on July 28! In celebration of this auspicious news, we’re bringing you behind the scenes of the upcoming arena shooter meets futuristic paintball multiplayer extravaganza, to see why the team at Giant Scam is better equipped than anyone to bring a game this idiosyncratic to the virtual realm. For one, they’ve got plenty of experience developing for VR — a notoriously tricky platform —  with their karate and friendship rhythm game Chop It rocking positive reviews on Steam. Adding to that, they’ve got a decade-plus of experience playing real-life competitive paintball.

In this latest video, Giant Scam Founder and Lead Engineer Jesse Keogh and Technical Artist and Engineer Tanner Netterville offer a peek behind the curtains to showcase how they brought these two concepts together to create Snapshot VR.

Along with some fresh and exciting gameplay, the guys provide some unique insight into the still-developing world of multiplayer virtual reality, with all the challenges and opportunities that it’s bringing to the gaming industry. They’ll also demonstrate the appeal of short-burst, highly intense matches that are perfect for the player that doesn’t have several hours to dedicate to a sprawling Battle Royale game but craves the strategic and tactical teamwork of a crisp, polished, team shooter.

Snapshot VR

Snapshot VR brings the incredibly fast-paced and intense tactical gameplay of real-life professional paintball into a futuristic virtual arena shooter with team-based matches of up to five players per side. With an average of only 45 seconds to dominate the other team, quick thinking, solid planning, and flawless teamwork are requisite ingredients for cooking up a victory stew.

Snapshot VR will be available in Early Access for Windows PC via Viveport on July 28, and with an Early Access launch on Steam to follow later this summer. Those with Viveport Infinity memberships will be able to play Snapshot VR for free with their membership at launch. The game will support the Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift S, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, Vive Cosmos, and Vive Cosmos Elite, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index with support for additional VR devices at full launch. Additional features and content will be released throughout Early Access.
