Ubisoft CEO Says Next Gen Consoles Will Play Games From Past Game Consoles

Many times during the lead-up to a console’s reveal, we hear all sorts of ideas thrown out by random people from random places on the internet. Sometimes the few that anyone looks at could actually be correct, and this might actually be one of them as it comes from Ubisoft’s CEO.

Yves Guilemont has revealed that next gen consoles could have almost the entire back catalog games of the previous generations of consoles. Sony and Microsoft haven’t been very vocal about the implementation of backward compatibility in their next gen consoles. However, it seems like we have finally got some information about it.

In a recent financial call, Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO, said about the upcoming consoles: “Those consoles will be running almost all the back catalogue of the previous consoles. It will be something new in the industry. It will help the old generations to continue to be big consoles on the market for years to come.”

There isn’t much information about this apart from the above statement. However, this will surely excite people out there who are diehard fans of the PlayStation or Xbox brands. The previous generations have been home to some of the greatest games ever made and re-experiencing the same would be an opportunity none of the fans will be willing to miss. We do know that Microsoft is planning to implement some sort of backwards compatibility with their Xbox Series X, as stated on their own website, but whether it actually gets implemented remains to be seen. The same goes for Sony, but they have yet to announce anything on backwards compatibility beyond the PS4.

I know that I am one of many people who would love to see these companies’ consoles access their full back catalog from their first consoles up to now. As someone who frequents shops to find some of these older games, finding certain ones is nearly impossible unless you look for them online and then they’re at higher prices. Whether Sony does this through their PS Now program or something similar to what Microsoft has done for the Xbox One is yet to be seen.

As mentioned above, for Microsoft, when they announced the Xbox Series X at last year’s Game Awards, Microsoft left a bit of news on their console including backwards compatibility. They stated: “Thanks to backward compatibility, you can expect your gaming legacy, thousands of your favorite games across four generations of gaming.” When looking at Xbox One’s backwards compatibility, that’s nowhere near even a thousand games … but if that is what Microsoft is building off of for their next generation of console then it’s a good start.

Hopefully we will hear more on both consoles soon as we are getting closer and closer to the holiday season. I do have to wonder though … do you want to see any generation of console made backwards compatible for the PS5 or the Xbox Series X? If so, what games? Let me know in the comments below!
