Over the years there have been many awesome games that have been released on Xbox, Playstation, and more. There has even been a rise in mobile gaming too as more players are starting to game on mobile and tablet devices too. For many years now Marvel has been releasing films for the Infinity War saga and other spin-off films. Over time audiences have also seen some of their favorite superheroes grace game consoles too, such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. Whether you’re a fan of the films or the comics, here are some great games featuring some of the best Marvel characters.
Spider-Man
There has been a range of Spider-Man video games over the years as far back as 2001. But in 2018, there was a long-awaited game that fans couldn’t wait to play. Marvel’s Spider-Man was released worldwide on PS4 in 2018 and has received quite high reviews since then. Rated 9/10 from EGM, GameSpot, and Destructoid, the game was praised for its graphics, narrative, and gameplay. Rather than seeing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in his early days (like the films), this is a more experienced character who is more mastered in fighting crime in New York City. The next game to be released featuring your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, scheduled for release on PS4 and PS5 this November. In terms of the film released, there have been many film series and actors associated with Spider-Man. In 2002, Tobey Maguire starred in his own Spider-Man film trilogy and later on in 2012 Andrew Garfield took on the role. More recently, starring in a few Avengers films and some of his own, Tom Holland is currently cast as the young and enthusiastic Peter Parker. His recent film, Spider-Man: Coming Home, made over $1.1b at the worldwide box office. For future films, recently there was news circulating online that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are rumored to return for Kevin Feige’s untitled Spider-Man 3.
Deadpool
Since its 2016 release, the film role of anti-hero Wade Wilson/Deadpool has been played by Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool was so well-received that it was even nominated for two Golden Globes and a sequel was also later released in 2018 to similar success. Just like in the 2013 video game, Deadpool is full of sharp comedy and continuously breaks the fourth wall, which is a great alternative viewing for audiences used to watching other Marvel films on the big screen. The game was released on a variety of consoles including Microsoft Windows, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2013, and later PS4 and Xbox One in 2014. On its release, the game did receive quite mixed reviews. While critics praised how the game stayed true to the comics, and enjoyed the humor, it was also criticized for its controls, combat, and repetitive gameplay.
Avengers
Since the release of Iron Man in 2008, there have been twenty-three films that have made up the ‘Infinity Saga’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase three officially came to a close last year with Avengers: Endgame being the final Avengers film. The spectacular film starred an incredible number of superheroes including Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Ant Man, Captain Marvel, and many more. Avengers: Endgame was even nominated for an Academy Award and is now the highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing Avatar. There are some films in the MCU, and also DCEU, which are some of the highest-grossing movies, spurred on by the sale of merchandise too. Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing movie in the Marvel movie franchise taking in over $2.7b at the worldwide box office.
Only just a few months ago, a new Marvel’s Avengers video game was released by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix for Windows, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia. The action role-playing game is mainly inspired by the MCU superhero group but also includes elements from Marvel’s long-running comic book mythology. Unlike Avengers: Endgame, so far the video game has received either mixed or average reviews. IGN had given the game 6/10, praising its superhero campaign and combat but criticizing its repetitiveness and technical issues.
