Sleuthing in Style: Masala Games’ Indian Mystery Adventure

Masala Games just dropped a fresh gameplay trailer for their debut PC title, Detective Dotson, at the Future Games Show Summer Showcase 2024. This trailer offers a glimpse into a vibrant, stylized version of modern India where players don the role of Detective Dotson. Expect to dive into exploration, master disguises, and utilize a clue board to crack mysteries.

What’s Detective Dotson All About?

Detective Dotson throws players into the shoes of Dotson, a reluctant detective navigating the intricacies of modern-day India. The game is up for wishlist on Steam, and there’s a demo available to give a sneak peek into the adventure. The demo tasks players with unraveling the mysterious death of Dotson’s father. Gamers will chase down criminals, hunt for clues, don disguises, spy on enemies, and recruit team members. The full release promises more episodes, slated to drop later this year.

Tech and Tunes: Behind the Scenes

Built in Unity, Detective Dotson features controller support and an original soundtrack crafted with the help of Nikhil Rao from Indian Ocean, the pioneers of Indian fusion rock. This adds a unique auditory flavor to the already rich visual experience.

Future Games Show Collaboration: Pixel Art Cameos

Future Games Show hosts Roger Clark (Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2) and Britt Baron (Tifa from FFVII Rebirth) were transformed into pixel art avatars for a special segment revealing the trailer. Shalin Shodhan, Founder and CEO of Masala Games, shared his excitement:

“We always enjoy creating pixel art versions of our collaborators as a token of our appreciation. Future Games Show gave us the chance to elevate this by including the show presenters in our game’s Indian street-side set. Finding out it was Roger Clark and Britt Baron was thrilling, and we had them dressed up in Dotson-ified avatars, creating the entire segment in just four days using Unreal Engine.”

In this creative bit, Britt is missing, and Roger steps off stage to find her. Both appear as pixel art versions in a cozy Indian mohalla set. Britt is seen hanging back from a wedding procession in a fuschia ghagra and wedding jewelry, while Roger is dressed as a local roadside romeo. Together, they introduce the game, with Roger humorously pondering their return to human form.
