When The Light Dies, a brand new ‘PQube Original’ project, is set to make its debut on Steam, offering players a thrilling survival experience in a desolate, frozen wilderness. This unique game combines elements of survival and roguelite genres, immersing players in a murky world of shadow and obscurity where they must fight to keep the encroaching darkness and lurking horrors at bay.

Repel monstrous hordes

In When The Light Dies, players must utilize an arsenal of weapons to repel waves of foul creatures closing in from all directions. The game challenges their combat skills as they face relentless and terrifying adversaries.

Keep the light burning

To survive in this dark and dangerous world, players must keep the light burning. They can scatter firepits to illuminate their surroundings and refill their oil lantern to stave off the encroaching darkness. However, as the light levels drop, so does their character’s sanity, resulting in faster and more deadly adversaries.

Survive a hostile environment

Surviving in When The Light Dies requires managing temperature and hunger gauges. Players must be mindful of the adverse effects of frostbite and malnutrition as they navigate the harsh environment. The game presents a realistic and challenging portrayal of the consequences of neglecting these vital aspects.

Scavenge the wastes

Exploring a nightmarish, procedurally generated world is crucial to finding precious supplies in When The Light Dies. Players must scavenge for food to stay healthy and read books to calm their feverish minds, offering temporary relief in the face of despair.

Grow your power

As players progress in the game, they have the opportunity to absorb the souls of the slain and unlock powerful new abilities. With the ability to pin, reroll, and stack upgrades, they can develop their character according to their own playstyle and preferences.

Cast forbidden dark magic

In When The Light Dies, players can gain eldritch knowledge and tap into forbidden dark magic. They can expend their character’s sanity to unleash cosmic blasts, baleful flames, and unholy healing spells, adding a unique twist to the gameplay mechanics.

The stars will align

Death is not the end in When The Light Dies. Players can look to the night sky and chart a course through strange and esoteric constellations. By doing so, they gain permanent stat buffs and abilities, empowering their character even after multiple playthroughs.

Interview with Producer Harrison Lewis

In an exclusive interview with PQube’s Producer, Harrison Lewis, we delve into the motivations and inspirations behind When The Light Dies.

Q: What drove PQube to create a game like ‘When The Light Dies’?

Harrison: When The Light Dies came to be due to a series of fortunate coincidences. We had the idea for our own project and wanted to collaborate with people we had previously enjoyed working with. It just so happened that Electric Monkeys shared our vision for the game, and we knew they would excel at bringing it to life. We had a great working relationship with them in the past and were thrilled to take it to the next level. From there, our own little project, When The Light Dies, started taking shape.

Q: What was the concept/inspiration for the game?

Harrison: Our team was caught up in the Vampire Survivors hype, and we couldn’t help but be drawn into it. We extensively played and researched survivors-like games, and during that time, I had a conversation with Hugo from Electric Monkeys. We realized that their game, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, had a special place in our hearts. We loved the added control over shooting and movement that it offered compared to other games in the genre. We wanted to create something that focused on friction-based mechanics.

As discussions about When The Light Dies progressed, I was reading The Terror by Dan Simmons, a fictionalized account of a horrific and despair-filled expedition to the Northway Passage in the 1840s. The idea of our character being stranded alone in the darkness and hunted by unknown entities resonated with us. That’s how the concept for When The Light Dies was born.

Q: Who are the developers, and why did you choose to work with them on this project?

Harrison: Electric Monkeys is a young game studio based in São Paulo, Brazil. We have had the pleasure of closely collaborating with the team that previously worked on the PQube-published Gravity Heroes. Since then, they have formed a three-person team to work on When The Light Dies. Josiel, also known as Zyel, is the lead developer, Liferson is the lead pixel artist, and Hugo serves as the game designer, product manager, and co-creator of Electric Monkeys. Working with them has been a fantastic experience. They are not only incredibly talented but also a lot of fun to work with.

Q: What is the creative process like?

Harrison: The development of When The Light Dies has been an incredible collaboration. The small team size, combined with their eagerness and creativity, has allowed for a super-fast development cycle. During our development meetings, we exchange ideas, and Electric Monkeys brings those ideas to life. We have been consistently impressed with the team’s fantastic work. We are all enthusiasts of the genre and have put a lot of passion into creating a unique approach to the survivors-like formula. We hope the Survivors’ community will appreciate what we have crafted.
