Seattle Powerhouses Go Solo
As the calendar turns to 1 January 2024, Seattle-based developer Harebrained Schemes (HBS) and game publisher Paradox Interactive (Paradox) will officially sever ties. The two gaming entities collaborated on titles like the Shadowrun trilogy, BATTLETECH, and The Lamplighters League. Both parties confirm that the split is a result of mutual agreement, shaped by divergent strategic and creative interests.
Ownership and Future Ventures
Post-split, Paradox will maintain control over The Lamplighters League, among other titles developed by HBS. On the flip side, HBS is on the lookout for fresh publishing, partnership, and investment opportunities to expand its horizons.
Paradox’s Strategy Shuffle
Charlotta Nilsson, COO of Paradox, sheds light on the refocused company strategy, emphasizing their pivot towards “core niches within strategy and management games with endless qualities.” Paradox and HBS initially discussed the roadmap post-The Lamplighters League release, but soon realized their future projects didn’t align with each other’s portfolio plans. Nilsson expressed enthusiasm for HBS’s future endeavors, stating, “We’re very happy that this talented, gifted studio has the chance to continue and can’t wait to see what they will make next.”
HBS Holds Course
Meanwhile, HBS remains committed to its core mission. Brian Poel, Studio Operations Manager of HBS, assures that they will continue to support The Lamplighters League until the end of the year. He adds, “Our studio mission remains the same: to make games that challenge your mind and touch your heart.”
What’s Next for Gamers?
The split raises questions about the future of ongoing and upcoming projects from both entities. With HBS seeking new partnerships and Paradox narrowing its focus, the gaming community watches eagerly to see how these changes will shape the landscape of strategy, management, and other genres.
