Klondike Solitaire: the most popular card game in the world

If you’ve ever used a PC, chances are you’ve heard of the Klondike Solitaire game. It’s one of the most played and sought-after games available on the internet.

In 1990, Microsoft released the Windows 3.0 operating system. Klondike Solitaire was included for free for the first time in this version. The card game itself is a lot older and is talked about in books that are written a few hundreds of years ago. The popularity of the Windows operating system grew, and the Solitaire game on computers running on this operating system also became more and more popular. Everyone with a PC could play this card game for free. It became a well-known phenomenon in offices where many employees tried playing the game. In the 90s, more and more people got a PC at home and because of this, Solitaire was played more and more in the living room or study. Unfortunately, Microsoft Windows stopped offering the card game for free with the release of Windows 8, but luckily there are many free variants of the game available on the internet.

The rules of Klondike Solitaire are easy to understand, but completing the game is usually not that easy. In fact, it has been calculated that the game can be completed in only 48% of the cases. This is true at the most difficult level, which involves three cards. You can also choose to “deal with one card” in most games. The game can therefore almost always be completed successfully, especially if an ” Undo ” option is available.

To play Solitaire, grab one deck of playing cards and remove the jokers, as we won’t be using them. The cards are then divided into seven columns, with the first column receiving one card, the second receiving two cards, and so on, until the last column has seven cards. Only the top card of each column is displayed; the underlying cards are closed and hence not visible. After dealing the 7 columns, put the remaining cards face down in a separate reserve pile. In addition, the playing field has four empty places. The goal of the Solitaire game is to transfer all of the cards from the seven columns to the four vacant spaces. Each of these four slots is assigned a different color, and they must be arranged in ascending order from Ace to King. So, for example, all the cards of hearts will be sorted from Ace to King in box 1, all the spade cards will be sorted in box 2, and so on. Is everything in the correct place? Then you have won the game. To do so, play all of the cards in the seven columns and on the stock pile, and start looking for the low cards first (since we now know that the cards in the 4 empty spaces must be sorted from low to high). Find the aces first, then the twos, threes, and so on. Moving cards from one column to the next is how you sort. This may only be done in descending order, and the colors of the cards must be alternated, so a red 10 on a black jack, for example. Can’t make any more moves? Then, draw a card from the pile.

While reading all of this may be difficult, the game is actually quite simple to play. Just start playing, and you’ll quickly discover that you can’t stop! On the free online Solitaire website FreeSolitaire.com you can choose from a variety of game versions, all of which can be played online and right in your browser. You can also play Klondike on Solitaired and Solitaire Bliss, where you can create an account to track your best scores, and even play on leaderboards to compete against other players.
