Yomi 2: The Ultimate Fighting Card Game Enters the Ring on PC

Yomi 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the original “fighting card game,” developed by renowned game designer David Sirlin, has captured the attention of both the fighting and trading card game communities. Set to launch on Early Access for PC, Mac, and Steam Deck via Steam and Epic Games Store on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, Yomi 2 is generating excitement among gaming enthusiasts. A playable demo will be available from Monday, June 12th, offering a glimpse into the thrilling world of Yomi 2 before its official debut during Steam Next Fest.

The game presents a brand new competitive environment specifically designed to emphasize the intense back-and-forth action of turn-based combat. It seamlessly translates the familiar mechanics of traditional fighting games, such as combos, frame advantage, attack priority, and more, into an engaging card game format. Players will embark on a journey to master their deck of cards, much like learning the intricacies of a fighting game character’s moveset. Utilizing these powerful tools, they’ll unleash an unpredictable barrage of strikes, blocks, throws, dashes, and special moves to outmaneuver their opponents.

Success in Yomi 2 hinges on the ability to read the opponent’s actions and anticipate their strategies. By effectively countering their moves and disrupting their momentum, players can launch devastating offensives driven by a wide range of fighting systems. Employ standing blocks to defend against high attacks, crouch to block low strikes, foil throw attempts, and halt zoner characters from amassing a hand size advantage while they control the battlefield with long-range fireballs. As players execute enough combos, they’ll charge up a super meter, allowing them to deliver a visually stunning, high-damage finisher.

At the launch of Early Access, players will have the opportunity to select from a roster of nine unique characters, with additional fighters planned for future updates. Each character can enhance their special moves by equipping one of six powerful gems, providing them with the means to shift the momentum of battle in their favor. Offline play is available through the single-player Career mode, where players strive to become the city’s top Yomi player. Engage in tournaments against a vibrant cast of artificial personalities, refining your skills and tactics. The combo practice mode allows players to fine-tune their mechanics, while one-off matches against CPU opponents offer quick and exciting gameplay experiences.

Once players feel confident in their abilities, they can put their skills to the test in Yomi 2’s multiplayer modes. Engage in online battles with ranked and casual play options, or enjoy local multiplayer through pass-and-play functionality. The online multiplayer features synchronous matches, where each player takes their turn while observing their opponent’s moves. In addition, asynchronous multiplayer will be introduced at a later stage in Early Access, allowing players to participate in multiple matches while waiting for their opponents to take their turns.

The Early Access phase of Yomi 2 not only serves as an opportunity to refine the digital version of the game but also plays a crucial role in the development of a tabletop card game based on the same rules and mechanics.

“Updating the balance of a physical card game after its release can be challenging. Therefore, we are utilizing the digital version of Yomi 2 and the Early Access period to further develop the game and its content, taking into account feedback from the community,” explained David Sirlin, President and Founder of Sirlin Games. “Once we feel the game has reached a state of polish and balance, we will release the finalized card game alongside the fully-formed digital version.”

Yomi 2 is set to launch on Early Access for PC, Mac, and Steam Deck on Tuesday, June 27th via Steam and Epic Games Store, with a price tag of $24.99. Gaming enthusiasts and fans of both fighting games and card games alike can look forward to immersing themselves in the exhilarating world of Yomi 2, where strategic card play and intense combat come together in an epic showdown. Mark your calendars for June 27 and get ready to experience the ultimate fighting card game on your preferred gaming platform.

  1. Big fan of Yomi over here. I have all the physical decks double-sleeved for safekeeping. And I easily have over 800 hours played across the digital versions. It’s ridiculous that the digital version of Yomi still has crossplay between Steam & iOS.

Sirlin doesn’t seem to always get the benefit of the doubt, so it’s cool to read an article like this that was actually pretty positive. I just wish that was more common.
