Hi I’m Twitch personality Azrin11707, let’s talk about this little Gem, Northgard!
Is Northgard worth opening up that steam wallet for in our saturated RTS world we live in? Let’s find out.
Northgard is a real time strategy game based on Norse mythology in which you control a clan of Vikings vying for the control of a mysterious newfound continent.
The game is being developed by Shiro Games and was released on Steam Early Access Feb 22 2017. This game is pretty much Catan and Civilization had a baby, and placed their baby in the 700-900 AD era and BAM, Viking greatness. Still being developed, there is a lot of gameplay to be had already, let’s talk about that.
After years of tireless explorations, brave Vikings have discovered a new land filled with mystery, danger and riches: Northgard. The boldest Northmen have set sail to explore and conquer these new shores, bring fame to their Clan and write history through conquest, trading, or devotion to the Gods. That is, if they can survive the dire wolves and undead warriors roaming the land, befriend or defeat the giants, and survive the harshest winters ever witnessed in the North.
Graphics: Score 4.5/5 – For what this game is, the graphics are perfect. Building your clans territory, killing wolves, and sailing to glory can be seen, and is represented well by the graphics they have in the land of Northgard.
Gameplay: Score 5/5 – It’s so addicting… It’s sooooo addicting! Seriously fun to play. To explore different strats, delve deeper into your favorite clan’s strengths and weaknesses, or to even derive a good strat for surviving the winter, if you pick this game up you will be playing it a lot. It’s so much fun, you’ll find yourself starting another go at it again and again. Multiple clans to choose from, each having their own strengths and weaknesses. To understand how they work with their environment is key, expanding your empire, managing your resources… then you’ll have to battle the board, disasters, and other players, all while exploring the multiple Victory conditions, some even varying on map spawn.
Replayability: Score 5/5 – At a nice cool $19.99 on steam the content already provided is more than worth opening that steam wallet for. With 6 clans to choose from right now, a Campaign coming soon, tons of updates, and Multiplayer, this game has LOTS to offer. I don’t know their timeline, but seeing how good this game is, it’s be willing to bet it’s just going to get better, and better. P.S. Maps are always different and random 🙂
Controls: Score 5/5 – W, S, A, D to move your camera around, Letter keybinds to different information and menus provides and easy experience navigating through the land of Northgard. Ease of use is very high. Memorizing your keybinds can be done easily as well, but you can also click on screen buttons to bring up the same menus, so if you can’t memorize things, or find it easier to just on-screen button poke it’s there for you kids!
Sound: Score 5/5 – I’m not sure if the music in this game was laced in crack, but it’s addicting. It will get in your head. You will hum it… it’s going to happen. Between great background music, to all of your townsfolk vocal activations when you ask them to do things, and all of the other glorious sounds in gameit gives for an amazing little RTS experience. It sounds amazing from my RIG 515HD Lava 7.1.
Overview: Shiro Games has made a nice little diamond in a saturated world. To the RTS players out there, this game is a must have. They did a very nice job playing to the Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetic theory of game design, bringing us something that makes us want more and more of. Well done Shiro Games and Northgard team for this innovative game! I can’t wait to play the finished build, and I will be playing the current. To answer our question at the start of this, YES, Northgard is way worth buying it. See you in game 🙂
