Tips to Improve Gaming Experience on a Mac

Macs are not computers that are necessarily created for gaming. Some even say that Macs are completely unsuitable for gaming. But what is the pleasure in life if you only world and never play? Overall, Mac does have great speed and amazing performance, which are very important for gaming.

Surely, not every AAA game will run on a Mac, even if it is a very new model, but there are still plenty of choices to pick from. All in all, if Macs were so bad for gaming, we would not see so many gaming apps and gaming platforms like Steam, Origin, and Epic Games modified for macOS.

Surely, if you do not take proper care of your Mac and do not care about the regular maintenance work, you could experience some issues and difficulties with gaming. So to help you out with all that, today we want to share some tips about how you can improve your gaming experience on a Mac.

Tip #1: Reduce Fan Noise

If you ever tried gaming on Mac, either it was a game you had installed on your Mac or just an online game that uses Flash, you have probably noticed that the fan noise of your computer increases immediately. Even if it is a brand new MacBook. And that may scare you off from gaming, especially if you heard some rumors about how Macs are not meant for gaming.

Of course, you need to accept the fact that the issue is there – but there are many methods that can help you fix it. For example, if you hear a loud fan noise, and it annoys you, one of the easiest ways to solve it is by using specialized software that disables heavy memory consumers.

Tip #2: Check the Specifications of Your Mac

These are some of the most important things to do before you download a game. If you want to make sure it runs smoothly without lagging, the specifications of your Mac must comply with the game’s specifications.

And it is completely normal practice – even the most professional gamers that have incredible gaming computers check the specifications of a game before they purchase it. Because one of the most important factors that everyone wants in a game is good graphics and smooth performance. The gaming industry is constantly growing, and so are the requirements for new games.

Tip #3: Quit Background Apps

As most games need a lot of memory resources to run, which is usually the reason your Mac’s fans start to work very loud once you launch a game, you should quit all of the applications that are unnecessary and running in the background while you play your game.

It is very likely that you do not use most of the running applications when you are playing – the one that we would recommend to leave open is the antivirus app. This will not only make your Mac’s fans work quieter, save your battery life, but it will also improve the overall gaming experience.

Tip #4: Make Sure You Have Enough Hard-Drive Space

MacBooks often have small hard-drives, which often cause them to run slower. This is why you need to clean your hard-drive from unnecessary apps and files occasionally. To check how much storage space is currently occupied, go to the hard drive settings or right-click on the disk for properties.

Here, you should choose the Storage tab and wait until the computer is finished with its calculations. After a few moments have passed, you will be able to see how much space you have left and how much space is occupied by apps and all sorts of files.

If you see that the storage situation is quite problematic, make sure you delete all the unnecessary items – this will help your Mac run faster and make your gaming experience better. But most importantly – do not forget to empty your Trash Bin after you deleted a bunch of files. Otherwise, they will still be stored on your computer and using hard-drive space.

Tip #5: Update macOS

You can be an experienced gamer, have a bunch of gaming accessories and a new gaming headset, but you will never reach the best performance if you do not update your Mac. Always ensure that Mac’s operating system is up to date.

Updates differ, but they often include important performance upgrades, bug fixes, drivers, and safety updates. So if you want your games to run smoothly, all of these updates can be a lot of help, especially the ones that include drivers and safety updates – if your computer is not safe, nor is your files or game save data.
