YamatoCannon farewelled by Fnatic

We are still waiting for the official presentation of the new League of Legends line-up at Fnatic, but today the black and orange served us a dose of information in the so-called meantime. Unpleasant news for fans of both FNC and Jakob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi. After two years, the Swede ended his cooperation with the British organization.

Fnatic Says Goodbye to Their Coach

Mebdi officially joined Fnatic at the end of November 2020, thus spending two full seasons in the black and orange colors. The results achieved by his charges during this time can undoubtedly be counted as satisfactory – after all, they managed to get promoted to the World Championships twice and finished on the podium of Europe’s top league in three of the four splits. On the other hand, however, the League of Legends European Championship cup was out of the formation’s reach, and both of their appearances at Worlds ended in the group stage (although here it is worth keeping in the back of your mind the unexpected departure of Elias “Upset” Lipp from the team last year).

Team manager Javier “Dardo” Zafra spoke in glowing terms about Mebdi on the occasion of his farewell. “His energy and attitude made these two years truly memorable, and his presence in the team constantly helped us to overcome all circumstances, even when things looked difficult and impossible, as this summer split can prove. Good luck in the future and thank you for all your efforts for Fnatic,” the Spaniard concluded.

What’s Next for YamatoCannon?

What will be the next step in the Swedish coach’s career? That is unknown for now. The situation is different with his successor at Fnatic because according to information already provided more than three weeks ago by Alejandro “anonymousotum” Gomis, the new head coach of the LoL team at FNC will be Gonçalo “Crusher” Pinto, who will be a promotion from the academy – if, of course, this information is confirmed.

Fnatic Raised the Championship Cup

It is no exaggeration to say that Fnatic is one of the legendary teams when it comes to the Counter-Strike scene. In recent years, however, the orange and black have been mainly focused not on success, but on recovering from a massive crisis that saw them fall out of the world’s top tier. On November 21 2022, Fnatic won another huge title. Previously they celebrated winning the championship title DreamHack Masters Malmö 2019. That event took place back in October 2019, meaning that the British team had waited more than three years to get another taste of triumph in the CS: GO competition. Interestingly, that success is remembered by Freddy “KRIMZ” Johansson, who is still present in the line-up, but who is currently pausing. As a result, Fnatic had to rely on academy player Peppe “Peppzor” Borak on Finnish soil, but this did not prove to be such a problem in the end.

Even in the group phase, Jamie “keita” Hall’s players performed very well and only lost one game to Complexity. This gave them top spot in Group B and direct access to the semi-finals, where the orange and black team defeated Astralis, 2-0. The same result also fell in the grand final, where Peppzor and co. proved to be better than BIG! Thus, it was Fnatic who took the championship and the $100,000 top prize. But it doesn’t stop there, as their success in Finland has led to keita’s players securing a place in the play-in phase of Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2022! And this means that, regardless of their position in the ESL ranking, we will definitely see them next year.
