First Ever Grubby Games Convention Raises Money For Children’s Miracle Network

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will hold its first ever Grubby Games Convention (GG Con) Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4, to raise funds for Regional Health’s Children’s Miracle Network. The event also features the state League of Legends Championship.

The 24-hour game-a-thon portion of GG Con begins at noon Saturday, Nov. 3, in Frasier Gymnasium in the King Center. (Campus Map) The event runs through the night into Sunday. The League of Legends State Championship between SD Mines, South Dakota State University, Dakota State University and Black Hills State University gets underway at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to GG Con, both to cheer on teams in the championship and teams raising money for Children’s Miracle Network. Gamers are also welcome to “drop in” to the fundraising portion of the event. As of Thursday, 70 gamers were signed up to participate.

“GG Con is a great way to raise money for children’s medical needs while raising awareness about gaming,” says Wyatt Engel, coordinator of Hardrocker Athletics Esports. SD Mines was the first university in the state to establish a varsity esports team, which it did this year. “Gaming is so much more than just playing video games. It’s about teambuilding, strategizing, socializing and fundraising for great causes.”

Gamers and teams can bring their own computer setups. GG Con will provide LAN areas to support 70 setups and console stations. Some of the games that will be played include World of Warships, League of Legends, Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers, Battle Royale games, Halo, JackBox and Doom.

GG Con will be livestreamed on Twitch and gamers will raise money by taking donations while they play. Teams have also raised funds prior to the event.
