One of the industry’s top mobile game developers and publishers, Netmarble, recently released its third Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) report. This publication, which originally commenced in 2021, lays out the company’s primary initiatives that focus on operating in a responsible manner. Central to the report is an emphasis on sustainability and governance, covering a spectrum of key topics including ESG management, main ESG challenges, and sustainable achievements.

2023 ESG Report: A Detailed Look

  • Enhancing User Engagement: Netmarble has made strides in expanding its interactive communication with its users. This includes venturing into new media platforms and curating unique content for each platform to provide game-related updates.
  • R&D Expansion: Investment in R&D saw a significant growth of 52.7% in 2022 compared to the prior year, amounting to a 32.1% R&D-to-sales ratio.
  • Information Security: Prioritizing data privacy and secure gaming services, the company achieved a record of zero security and data breaches.

Support Together:

  • Eco-Friendly Gaming: Netmarble has introduced a power-saving mode in its games, which reduces power usage by allowing games to operate autonomously without any user input.
  • Community Contributions: In monetary terms, the company contributed a total of $2.047 million USD (KRW2,662 million) to community programs like Play Center, Family Game School, Game Concert, e-Festival for Students with Disabilities, and Game Academy.

  • Employee Development: Recognizing the central role of its workforce, Netmarble invested in an average of 10.6 training hours for each employee.

  • Risk Management: In 2022, regular audits of the company’s marketing outsourcing process were conducted. This led to the discovery of vulnerabilities in seven distinct areas, which resulted in 21 identified areas of improvement that are currently being worked upon.

Kwon Young-sig, Netmarble’s CEO, mentioned, “2022 was earmarked as the Year of ESG Management for us. We took proactive steps, such as launching extensive training programs and significant campaigns, to boost company-wide awareness.” He also highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to fortifying its system and capabilities with a long-term vision focused on sustainable management supported by a governance approach that is board-centered.

Incorporating Global Standards

Taking its commitment to sustainable business practices a step further, Netmarble underwent a reorganization of the ESG Committee, positioning it directly under the Board of Directors. Additionally, it earned the distinction of being the inaugural Korean gaming company to align with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for human rights management. This global initiative, with participation from over 20,000 entities spanning 162 countries, seeks to instill, execute, and promote corporate social responsibility measures that meet worldwide standards.
