Online Gaming Terminology and Acronym You Must Know

You’ll need to learn the terminology associated with gaming if you want to jump into the newest competitive trend. Although definite phrases are specific to each gaming community, some general terms are relatively widely used. The terms and acronyms used most frequently in gaming are listed below.

Online Casino Gaming Terminology

Online casino games use different terminology from other online games. You will encounter these terminologies when playing or reading articles like the GG online poker review or casino terms and conditions. There are many terminologies, and the list is continually growing. However, here are the top ten terms you should know:

  • Bankroll:the total amount a player owns.
  • Bonus:a promotion run by an online casino to incentivize players to use their platform.
  • Cashback:a common offer by online casinos that gives players some funds back.
  • Cash-out:happens when an online casino player withdraws their cash from an online casino.
  • Flat betting:happens when a player bets a similar amount consistently.
  • Free Spins:an offer on slot games that gives players free chances to win.
  • Hand:the cards that each player holds and uses.
  • House:the casino
  • Jackpot:the largest prize a player can win at a casino.
  • Odds:a casino player’s direct chance of winning a round or game.

HUD (Heads-Up Display)

When playing, a first-person shooter, information like health, ammo, and weapons is presented on the screen.

FOV (Field of view)

The FOV of a first-person shooter refers to the amount of the world that is ever onscreen. While a broader Field of View enables you to view more of the environment around your character, a narrow Field of View decreases your peripheral vision. In video games, FOV normally runs from 80 to 100, with 90 being a popular and generally acceptable value.

LoS (Line of Sight)

Refers to a clear, unbroken line of sight to something or to a skill that needs to see the target. Only when your character can view the target directly can they use an LoS ability.

AoE (Area of Effect)

Area of Effect describes an attack or ability that hits multiple targets rather than a single one over a large area (usually a circle, though not always). A fireball attack in a MOBA or RPG that explodes on impact and injures everyone in the surrounding area is an illustration. A sniper rifle would not normally be AoE in a shooter, but a rocket launcher would.

DPS (Damage Per Second)

The typical damage a weapon, attack, or character deals in a given period. Due to the lag period between each episode, attacks that deal high damage yet move slowly may have a low DPS. A DPS character causes much damage through repeated, often quick, direct attacks in a MOBA or class-based shooter like Overwatch (e.g., Tracer, Overwatch).

DOT (Damage Over Time)

It does exactly what it says. After the initial blow, a Harm Over Time strike inflicts ongoing or increasing damage. Consider an RPG poison attack.

Aggro

A different non-acronym In MMORPGs or MOBAs, the term “aggro” describes attracting the attention and attacks of opponents, who are often NPC monsters.

CS (Creep Score)

Creep Score counts how many last hits a player has delivered on the NPC minions (Creeps) in lanes. It is exclusive to MOBAs like DOTA2. Not an assessment of how repulsive you are.

PvP (Player versus Player)

Players engage in direct conflict with each other during multiplayer battles. It is vocabulary that is frequently used in MMOs.

PvE (Player versus Environment)

It refers to battles in which players engage bosses and NPC adversaries individually or in teams. It is a vocabulary that is frequently used in MMOs.

NPC (Non-Player Character)

A character in a video game that the player cannot control. This terminology is common in MMORPGs and RPGs.

HP (Health Points)

In video games, a player’s health is typically indicated by numbers out of a total.

MP (Mana or Magic) Points

This is the number of resources used in RPGs, MOBAs, and MMOs for casting spells or using abilities. It typically refuels over time. With more MP, you can cast more spells without waiting for it to recharge.

XP (Experience points)

You need to earn them to level up in RPGs and even shooters like Call of Duty and Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

MVP (Most valuable player)

This is the competitor that had the biggest impact throughout a round or the entire match.
