If you’re new in the esports scene, you might not yet have heard of Apex Legends, but it’s one of the big guns in this world, so learning about it is crucial. Apex Legends is a free battle royale shooter game from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts.

Released in 2019, it is now playable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. It also supports cross-platform play across all platforms excluding mobile ones. Apex Legends’ major esports event is the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS). It is a global Apex Legends tournament organized by Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts. The inaugural season of this esports event took place between 2020 and 2021. This read focuses on the Year 3 series, which is set to take place between 2022 and 2023.

This year’s ALGS is one many are waiting for. Exciting changes have been made to ensure it tops ALGS Year 2, and we love to see it! Apex Legends Global Series Year 3 will feature three in-person events, the Pro League, Challenger Circuit competition, and a whopping $5,000,000 in prize pool money. The live competitions are: the Split 1 Playoffs, Split 2 Playoffs, and Year 3 Championship, which will take place in the winter, spring, and summer of 2023, respectively.

The minimum rank for participation has also been changed to Silver IV, creating more opportunities for players worldwide to participate in the games. In addition, each region’s pro league participation will be open to only thirty teams, and winning teams from the Challenger Circuit competitions will qualify for the Qualifiers.

Pre-Season Qualifiers

The season will kick off with the Preseason Qualifier tournaments. These four competitions were used to choose the eight teams per region participating in Split 1 of the Pro League. The eight teams were added to the 22 already invited, making the number up to 30 teams per region.

Other participating teams got moved to Split 1 of the Challenger Circuit. The tournaments occurred in October, with different dates assigned to each region.

Pro League

Split 1 of the Pro League began on November 6, 2022. The five regions involved were composed of thirty teams, 22 from direct invitations and 8 from the Preseason Qualifiers. Since the LAGS uses a promotion and relegation system, the bottom eight teams were relegated to the SPlit 2 Pro League Qualifier.

Challenger Circuit

The ALGS Challenger Circuit events ran parallel with the Pro League Splits, and top teams were given a chance to qualify for Split 2 of the Pro League or the Last Chance Qualifier. The Challenger Circuit kicked off on November 19, 2022, with weekend tournaments held in the North America, APAC North, Apac South, EMEA, and South American regions.

This in-person event will be held in the summer of 2023. 40 of the top Apex Legends esports teams worldwide will compete for $2,000,000 of the prize money. The dates and locations have not yet been announced, but the format has. The 40 teams will first be shared into 4 groups of 10 in the Group Stage based on Playoff points or Qualifier performance.

Each group gets to play against all the other groups in a 6-match series event. After the Group Stage comes the Bracket Stage, a double-elimination stage which will be an 8-match series event. Teams will be assigned starting positions based on performance in the Group Stage; the top 20 in the Winners Bracket and the bottom 20 teams in the Losers Bracket.

Following the Bracket Stage matches, the Match Point Finals will be held to determine the ALGS Year 3 Championship winners. The event will feature the top 10 teams from the Winners Bracket and the top 10 teams from Round 2 of the Losers Bracket.
