XPG delivers their new affordable wired gaming headset in the Precog S. This headset will become the next generation following the Precog which we had a chance to review last October. It’s compatible with PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Mobile Devices. XPG presents the Precog S as a lightweight wired gaming performance headset. It features 50mm drivers, an omnidirectional microphone, on-ear volume control, spatial 3D audio support, and a 3.5mm connector with a Y cable priced at $59.99.
If it’s lightweight you’re after, then you will be looking in the right place here. XPG’s new Precog S is a solid contender in the lightweight class weighing in at 300g. If you game in sessions over 4 or 5 hours, then you will find more comfort in a lighter headset as opposed to one with more comfortable ear cushions. Fortunately, with this specific model, you will also get comfortable memory foam ear cushions. Both headband and ear cushions are made from the same mesh breathable fabric. Its combination of lightweight and solid headband system makes this headset upper deck in the comfort category.
I am a fan of keeping it simple but there are features in a headset I can’t live without. I need a retractable or detachable boom microphone. I want to be able to daily lifestyle with my headset and not look like I’m in a full-scale Esports tournament in a Starbucks. Aside from this design flaw, the all-black headset looks clean. I think we can all agree that at this price point we won’t be getting any RGB lighting effects onboard. However, easy access to the mute button and volume control wheel on the right ear is the type of basic you do want.
I am a huge fan of 50mm drivers. I think they are the perfect size for hearing subtle sounds like footsteps due to the extra low-end frequencies. Spatial 3D Audio Support via Windows Sonic allows you to create that 3D surround experience. In all honestly, the sound quality of this headset is solid. Its bass is powerful, and the audio remains clear and crisp for a headset at this price range. Mic quality remains a bit suspect but it’s not as bad as others at this price point.
If you’re looking for an entry-level headset to get you started that is easy on your head definitely take a peek in this direction. XPG has earned my trust as a solid affordable brand that usually delivers more for your money in the middle to low price point category. Precog S gives you all the basics to get going if you can get past the microphone being out the entire time. At $59.99 you don’t have any complaints from me, this headset is priced where it should be.
