Final Fantasy XVI State of Play Unveils New Gameplay and RPG Elements, Kenshi Yonezu to Perform Theme Song

Square Enix has released new gameplay details for Final Fantasy XVI, the latest standalone title in the iconic franchise, during a dedicated PlayStation State of Play broadcast. The game, set for release exclusively on PlayStation 5 on June 22nd, 2023, showcases new role-playing game (RPG) elements and captivating Eikon battles. As the first full action RPG in the series, Final Fantasy XVI is set in the dark fantasy world of Valisthea, where the land’s fate is determined by the powerful Eikons and the Dominants who control them. The game follows warrior Clive Rosfield, sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix.

The State of Play broadcast revealed numerous details about the upcoming game, including:

  • New Hideaway advisors: Clive’s base, known as the Hideaway, allows players to learn more about Valisthea’s history by speaking with historian Harpocrates and military scholar Vivian, who provides a relationship chart for the game’s characters.
  • New training function: Players can practice their combat skills in training mode by accessing the Arete Stone within the Hideaway.
  • New hunts: Players can discover powerful monsters in the game world by checking Wanted Posters in the Hideaway. Defeating these enemies yields valuable rewards.
  • New battle footage: The broadcast showcased various combat actions, Eikon battles, and more.

Additionally, Square Enix announced that Kenshi Yonezu, a popular singer-songwriter known for his single “Lemon,” will perform the game’s theme song, “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing.” Yonezu, an avid gamer, and Final Fantasy fan expressed his excitement at the opportunity to contribute to the game that has had a significant impact on his life.

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with Yonezu, praising the artist’s ability to create music that resonates across generations and his passion for gaming. Fans can anticipate the theme song to capture the world, story, and themes of Final Fantasy XVI. The game is rated M (Mature).
