Frost Giant Studios, a new independent game development studio, announced today it raised a $4.7M seed round, led by BITKRAFT Ventures, with participation from 1 Up Ventures, GC Tracker, Riot Games, and Griffin Gaming Partners. The capital will be used to scale the team in order to begin building a prototype for gameplay, conduct consumer research, and expand operations.
Founded by Blizzard veterans Tim Morten, former Production Director for StarCraft II; and Tim Campbell, original Lead Campaign Designer for WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne; the new studio is on a mission to bring real-time strategy (RTS) games to a broad audience. Frost Giant Studios has assembled an elite group of veterans from Blizzard’s real-time strategy team across art, design, and engineering.
Frost Giant Studios plans to boldly advance the RTS genre, by applying what the team has learned from player feedback and player behavior over the past decade. The studio’s strategy is specifically anchored on lowering the barrier to entry into RTS as well as significantly enhancing co-operative, campaign and competitive gameplay. The legacy of competitive esports will also be carried forward: real-time strategy games have been key to the growth and development of the competitive gaming community globally.
“Real-time strategy players are an incredibly passionate community, and they deserve not just a great new game, but one they can share broadly with friends. Building a worthy successor will take time, but we’re incredibly excited and grateful to carry real-time strategy forward at Frost Giant Studios,” said Tim Morten, Frost Giant Studios CEO.
“Frost Giant Studios is on a mission to bring one of the most beloved genres to a broader audience,” said Scott Rupp, Founding General Partner at BITKRAFT Ventures. “We are excited to see some of the most experienced leaders in real-time strategy game development come together to build a game that will secure the future growth of the RTS genre while staying true to the core player fantasy of RTS.”
Further announcements from Frost Giant Studios are expected in 2021.
