Ex-Oculus Co-Founder Nate Mitchell’s New Mountaintop Studios Secure $30m Series A funding

Ex-Oculus Co-Founder Nate Mitchell’s New VG Dev Studio – 1st Environmental Art Release + Series A

Today, Mountaintop Studios, co-founded by ex-Oculus VR co-founder Nate Mitchell, announced a $30m Series A funding. They also released art from their upcoming, unannounced PvP FPS game which is in development.

Mountaintop Studios is a team of 35 folks made up ex-Epic, Blizzard, Naughty Dog, Respawn, Infinity Ward, Ubisoft, Raven, Turtle Rock, Double Fine, PopCap, and Oculus.

They are excited to share that they have raised $30M from an amazing set of investors who share their vision for Mountaintop.

Jon Lai at Andreessen Horowitz led the round with participation from friends across the industry, including Spark Capital, Founders Fund, and Detroit Venture Partners. Jon brings his expertise as both a game dev at Riot and a publisher at Tencent, and they are thrilled to have him join the Mountaintop board.

When they founded Mountaintop last summer, they set out with a simple mission: Bring players together through exciting and unforgettable new challenges. That mission remains our northstar. They will use this round of funding to grow the team, continue to develop a world-class tech stack, and bring our first title to players everywhere.

Great games come from teams built on trust, respect, and inclusion, where everyone is heard, and nothing is someone else’s problem. Our commitment to being fully remote — forever — enables us to bring together an international all-star roster to create a new kind of studio. Today, our team has grown to include more than 35 talented developers based around the world.

They continue to carefully design our culture to maximize creativity, drawing on wisdom and experience from both games and tech. By keeping the team small and focused on a single project, they move faster, collaborate more effectively, and empower everyone to make better decisions.

At Mountaintop, they celebrate creative risk-taking and the successes — or sometimes instructive failures — that come with it. Philosophically, they believe in discovering the best version of our game through a consistent cycle of exploration, prototyping, playtesting, and iteration. They have been playtesting the game since the earliest days of the studio, and it’s made a huge difference in bringing us further, faster.

They are huge believers in bringing the community into the development process early and evolving the game with your input in my mind. If you’re interested in being a part of our first project’s evolution, sign-up for the newsletter for info on early Alpha playtests.
